My MS Journey: Knee Pain
From time to time over the last four years I have had trouble with knee pain. Particularly when standing for long periods of time. Prior to my diagnosis I had an MRI on my knee which showed some osteoarthritis which, at the time, was put down to overusage of the knee joint (good one – how overused can your knee be at 30?) Anyway, since my diagnosis I realise the knee pain is due to a shortening of the outer quadricep which pulls on my knees along with a corresponding weakness in the inner thigh. This is the treatment I have been using for the last 18 months and I have had some good results. Eventhough it is a recurring problem I try and keep up with this strapping and a few basic exercises to try and save my knees for the grinding and any more wearing of the cartiledge. This is not to replace advice from a physiotherapist but rather if you have this problem you can mention my experience and see if the same may be applied to you. By the way it is now 4 days since I recorded my last video so if you are wondering about my ON then I can tell you it is basically the same blurriness. Yet internally I am feeling pretty good

Hey Amanda! Haha nup (it was my idea) – I just wanted to share this little nugget as after about 3 years of knee pain my physio did this treatment and I have found it to be really beneficial. After chatting with Toby I thought perhaps others could benefit also. Well done on the 2 steps – next you’ll be taking the whole flight of stairs!! Love Kerri
Toby’s a sly dog huh? Getting you to show him your legs for ‘scientific’ purposes! But that’s really cool that they’ve identified that. I had similar things going on too, might ask em about taping… Anyway a quick brag- I walked up 2 steps today!!!!!!! Amanda.
@kezzcass They did rehab intensively on me at POW, but this was not shown. You are far better.
Hi Andrea, yes – it does feel like it is in the joint. That is why for so long I thought I had arthritis (before diagnosis). My knees will often swell when it is really bad. I get pain in feet, ankles and also in hips. My physio worked on getting my strides as straight and ‘normal’ as possible to ensure I wasn’t doing more damage. It takes a lot more concentration to walk straight – both feet facing forward and legs slightly wider apart is what I am constantly telling myself! K
What a great video Kerri,
Now I am going to have to look at my kness. I do have a lot of pain in them but it feels like the joints, now I am not sure.
Great visual to help understand. Do you get pain in your ankels?? I am having more and more of that and wonder if it is just due to the way I walik.
MS is one very starnge MonSter.
Thanks for the info
Andrea
You are right. Thank you! I will give it a try!
Yes – it cannot hurt to give it a go. I think a great deal of our problems with walking is that we don’t often concentrate on our gait and can develop some bad habits. Whilst there are some things about my walking I just cannot seem to improve (my right side tends to swing) at least I can keep my legs straight with the strapping. Kerri
I find that Neuros don’t get involved in the rehab side of MS. I was fortunate to be referred to an excellent rehab centre 18 months ago and I just pestered them about everything niggle and pain I had. This is one gem I walked away with
Thank you so much, Kerri. I do have knee problems too because I had two relapses where I lost the use of the leg and arm and my left knee was very weak for a very long time. Now it is much better but I continue to use the knee in the wrong way…so this suggestion might help me. I will ask the therapist that took care of me in the past. I will send her your video so she can take a look at it
Thanks a lot!
Tremendous. Why was I never shown this, even on Aus?
LOL! I cannot believe I did that – the things I do for my friends?! Ah well, hope it helps.

Phwoar! Cheers babe!
Seriously, thanks so much. Brilliantly explained. I’ll try to show it to my physio. Looks like I’m gonna have to shave my legs, eh? MS is just one big voyage of discovery…
