Knee Pain Relief : Get Support With a Skiing Knee Brace

When you ski do you have pain or discomfort in your knees?

You may have already seen people being taken off the mountain side because they have sustained some sort of injury. Now this is not always the case but it does happen more than it should. Often times, people injure one or both of their knees. Can you relate to this kind of experience?

Unfortunately, due to the exposed position of your knee, the knee joint and surrounding ligaments are vulnerable when you ski. The twists and turns, and the high speeds involved in skiing can put stress on your knees. For these reasons you should really consider getting knee support, whether you have injured your knees or not. Having a well designed knee brace to wear when you are skiing can help prevent future injuries from occuring and protect your knee if it is healing.

There have been a lot of advancements made in the development of release binding, which is used to reduce the amount of fractures that can occur with a person’s lower leg bones, but the risk still exists for knee injuries to occur. In fact, injuries to the knee joint, the ACL, MCL and menisci (plural form of meniscus) can be involved in up to 30 to 40 percent of all skiing alpine injuries. Most knee injuries that occur on the slopes are treated and the prognosis is favorable for the injury to completely heal. However, many knee injuries are not given a good prognosis and can prohibit a person from being able to return to the slopes.

What can you do as a skier to prevent knee injuries from taking place?

If you are at all worried that you may be prone to a knee injury or other knee problems, it is a very good idea that you consider purchasing and wearing a skiing knee brace. Tears to the knee ligaments and your meniscus can happen while you are enjoying the sport. Skiing knee braces have been known to reduce knee pain because they help to help stabilize and protect the knee while you are in motion.

Money saving advice : People will often times think that they need a custom knee brace. It is not that custom knee braces can be bad; often times they are very good. The point here is that you will have to go to a brace professional called an orthotist. They will need to take a cast and measurments of your leg. Then, after waiting for 2-3 weeks, you need to return to the orthotist to be finally provided with your new custom knee brace. These custom knee braces can cost 1200 – 1500 dollars, and if your insurance does not cover them you can be stuck with a large bill! However, non custom knee supports can serve you extremely well. You will need to take a few measurements of your knee, but the vast majority of the time, they can serve you just as well as a custom knee brace. Moreover, you will not have to wait 2-3 weeks, or pay 1200 – 1500 dollars. Knee brace manufacturers have accounted for different knee sizes and shapes, and unless you have an abnormal knee shape a non custom knee brace will fit you very well and save you at the very least, several hundred dollars.

Explanation of Chiropractic Treatment of Back and Leg pain

This video explains the chiropractic examination and treatment of back and leg pain. The video is made by the British Chiropractic Association. It is one of video’s which is featured on our website: www.miltonchiropractic.co.uk The chiropractors in our office are all members of the BCA and treat according to their guidelines. Milton Chiropractic Clinic is located just on the outskirts of Cambridge, United Kingdom

Knee pain is one of the most common maladies that brings patients into an arthritis specialist’s office. While there are many causes, the most common in people over the age of 35 is osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee.

The treatment for osteoarthritis involves a comprehensive approach employing patient education, maintenance of ideal weight, strengthening exercises for the quadriceps muscles (muscles in the front of the thigh) as well as the hamstring muscles (muscles in the back of the thigh.

Avoidance or reduction of activities that aggravate knee pain may also be required. For example, an auto mechanic who spends a lot of time in a crouched position or a carpet layer who kneels a lot may need to modify what they do. Another example may be to have a person who enjoys long distance running reduce the amount of training they do or cross train using other activities such as cycling or using an elliptical trainer.

While anti-inflammatory medications can help, many people are either sensitive to these drugs or simply don’t want to take them. So what else can be done?

Many people aren’t aware that something as simple as an ice pack applied to the knee for 10-15 minutes twice a day can dramatically reduce pain and inflammation due to OA. This should be done routinely, not just occasionally.

Also there are topical agents that can be used. For example, rubs, ointments, and creams that contain capsaicin often can relieve discomfort. Capsaicin works by irritating nerve endings and possibly by altering the production and effects of Substance P, a chemical messenger responsible for the perception of pain.

A preparation called Myorx, which contains Omega-3 fatty acids and menthol along with capsaicin may also be every effective in providing soothing relief. We use this preparation for our patients and get rave reviews.

The FDA recently approved Novartis’s Voltaren (diclofenac) topical 1% gel as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) prescription treatment for pain associated with osteoarthritis. It is the first prescription NSAID that can be applied directly to the site of OA pain. It is the first topical treatment for OA that has demonstrated effectiveness in the hands and knees in clinical trials.

The gel was studied among more than 900 patients with OA of the hand or knee. FDA approval was supported by the results of 2 randomized controlled studies. In one six-week trial, the gel led to a 46% reduction in pain levels in patients with hand OA. In a 12 week study, the gel reduced OA-related knee pain by 51%. Systemic absorption of Voltaren gel is 94% lower than that of oral diclofenac.

Another treatment that can be used with some effectiveness are patches. One example is the Thermocare heat wrap designed to help manage arthritis flare-ups with 12 hours of heat. Heat discs in the Thermocare contain a mixture of iron, charcoal, salt, and water, which when exposed to air, gives off consistent heat for 12 hours. The heat increases local blood circulation delivering oxygen and nutrients to the knee and promotes healing. These wraps have been compared with ibuprofen and acetaminophen in clinical trials. Thermocare provided 38% more pain relief than acetaminophen and significantly improved ranged of motion (68%) compared to ibuprofen.

Some patients also report that the use of patches containing lidocaine (Lidoderm) are effective in controlling OA pain. These patches can be worn for 12 hours followed by a 12 hour break. While Lidoderm for OA of the knee associated pain is not an FDA approved indication, it appears to be effective for many patients. Since there is the chance of systemic absorption, patients with a cardiac history should use this only under direct medical supervision.

Various braces can be used to good effect and that topic has been discussed by me in another article.

Coping With Arthritis Knee Pain

Arthritis is a disease of the joints connecting the bones of the body. This happens when the said cartilage of the joint becomes weak, brittle, or deteriorated; the effect of which is the exposure of the bare bones to conditions leading to arthritis.

Knee arthritis is the most common form of this disease. Generally, it is due to old age, being overweight, or just hereditary. It is common because the knee is a part of the body that is mostly used everyday, when walking, running, or doing outdoor activities; only the degree of pain varies.

Pain can be suffered not only from arthritis; there are many sources of knee pain. It may be from bursitis or the inflammation by reason of frequent and constant pressure like overuse and kneeling. Pain may also come from tendinitis or the pain in the knee while ascending or descending from the stairs or when engaging in sports and outdoor activities. Other causes includes a strain or sprain, torn ligaments due to accidents, dislocation of the knee cap, injuries, infections in the joint, and tumors.

There are several causes of arthritis knee pain and it consists of the Baker’s cyst, rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, connective tissue disorders, gout, and lupus. The Baker’s cyst is characterized as a fluid-filled bulge behind one’s knee that accompanies inflammation. The bad thing about the Baker’s cyst is that when the cyst bursts, it will not just affect the knee but also your calf.

In osteoarthritis, the cartilage of the joint slowly deteriorates revealing the joints to arthritis attacks. In rheumatoid, it is not just gradual deterioration but the cartilage is destroyed because of the inflammation. Simply put, the Baker’s cyst, rheumatoid, connective tissue disorders, gout and lupus have the same serious effect of severe inflammation including the tissues, bones, ligaments, nerves, and muscles around it.

Some common arthritis knee pain includes inflammation of the joints, swelling of the bones near the joints, problems in standing, walking, or running, and intolerable discomfort.

Arthritis pain varies depending on the cause. If the person suffering from arthritis belongs to the 50 years old and up bracket, the knee pain is pretty much tolerable but it is very hard to stand, walk, or run. In this case, the person suffering from this ailment must use a cane or a wheelchair for mobility. With respect to persons under 50 years of age, the cause of arthritis may be overuse, overweight, or genetic.

A knee is considered overused when the person is sports inclined and does not rest for a sufficient number of hours. In this type of arthritis the inflammation in the knee is serious and unbearable, but may still be cure through proper rest. When the person is overweight, the pain is experienced when walking or running. In this case it is having a hard time to carry the weight of one’s body.
